The 1995 Season

The 1995 season was one of the most exciting seasons ever for Colorado baseball fans. First was the much anticipated opening of Coors Field and then the 1995 season itself.

The fans flocked to Coors Field that first year of the new ballpark to experience what a new ballpark could offer and also admire the traditional architectural design. Attendance was at near sellout capacity for every game with the final tally coming in at 3,390,037 fans.

All of these baseball fans were treated to an exciting penant race with the Colorado Rockies almost beating out the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place. But in only their third year of existance the Rockies did earn the 1995 National League Wild Card.

In the first round of the playoffs, the Colorado Rockies battled the Atlanta Braves. The games were exciting, closely contested battles with the Rockies managing to win one on October 6th, Colorado 7, Atlanta 5. The Atlanta Braves did go on to win the World Series.

One of the fan's favorites of that 1995 season was Dante Bichette. Dante was a member in good standing of the "Blake Street Bombers." Dante brought a certain swagger and a lot of muscle to the plate. He will always be remembered for a dramatic, game-winning homerun in the fourteenth inning on Coors Field's Opening Day game in 1995. Dante went on to lead the league in homeruns with 40 that year. Dante also led the league in RBI's (128) and finished third in the league with a .340 batting average. Other members of the "Blake Street Bombers" were Larry Walker, Andres Galarraga, Ellis Burks and Vinny Castilla.
